Polymeric photoinitiators based on benzoin methyl ether moieties are found to display higher activity, as compared with the corresponding low-molecular-weight structural models, in the ultra-violet-initiated polymerization of acrylic monomers both in solution and in film matrix. The yield of ~ cleavage in the high- and low-molecular-weight photoinitiators is quite similar, whereas a large difference is found in the efficiency of monomeric radical generation, which is much higher in the first system. A possible explanation for the different behaviour is suggested
