The synthesis of a readily soluble, rigid-rod polyimide via Pd-catalysed polycondensation of 2,5-didodecylbenzene-l,4-diboronic acid and 3,6-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(4-bromo-2,5-didodecylphenylene) pyromellitic diimide is described. The polymer has been characterized by n.m.r., g.p.c, and osmometry showing that the Pd-catalysed polycondensation process proceeds practically without side reactions and is well suited for the synthesis of high molecular weight polyimides with defined structures
