Near-monodisperse polystyrene particles have been produced by dispersion polymerization in the presence of partially hydrolysed poly(vinyl alcohol) (35 mol%) as steric stabilizer in methanolic media. Control of mean particle size in the range 0.5-3.0 #m is demonstrated by modifying the solvency of the diluent for polystyrene which is presumed to influence the nucleation mechanism for particle formation.
